National Duty Free Marketing Initiative set to Launch!

2010 logo

As most of our members are aware from previous FDFA Communications, we are about to embark on the first phase of the National Duty Free Marketing Campaign.

The FDFA is repositioning its brand to better reflect the needs of travelers, as well as the quality of the products Duty Free lists. This national effort will begin in February 2011 with the launch of a new website, followed by retail and publicity campaigns. The FDFA is utilizing the services of the Marketing Firm - Beakbane Retail Connections out of Toronto, ON. The objective of this national initiative is to ensure that we are creating a more cohesive message regarding our industry to the public. As well, we hope to create greater awareness to the public of our industry and the value of shopping at Canadian duty free stores.

On February 8th, the FDFA is hosting a webinar to our 27 land border duty free participating stores. During this webinar, Beakbane will walk our stores though the new brand focus, a style guide to assist our stores in identifying how to use the brand focus in conjunction with their own store marketing strategies, and introducing the new National Duty Free website. Additionally, Beakbane will discuss the next steps in the initiative.

The FDFA will announce to all of our FDFA members when the website goes live to the public, which will occur shortly after the webinar. We do anticipate that there will be modifications to the website in the first 30 days after the launch. The new website will be entitled www.dutyfreecanada.com. The FDFA will be changing our website address to www.fdfa.ca.

There will also be many incredible opportunities for our supplier members to advertise on this site as the initiative progresses. The FDFA will ensure to keep everyone apprised of the project.

American Bus Association - FDFA Attendance

Early January 2011, Justin Guay and Laurie Karson of the FDFA's Professional & Business Development Committee attended the 2011 American Bus Association Convention held in Philadelphia. This was the first venture from the FDFA in participating in a national bus convention. The goal of the FDFA's attendance was to assess and identity how the FDFA in future could participate from a national level to promote our land border duty free stores to the bus and tour companies who attend this show.

While there are many opportunities at the ABA for the FDFA to consider in future years such as sponsorship, select appointments, etc., the FDFA is still determining whether future participation from a national level is the right course of action, or if assistance to our individual members via negotiating group rates is more effective. Since the show, the FDFA has sent to its operator members a post convention survey to examine further the needs of the stores for specific bus shows. The FDFA will follow up with all of our members on the final results of this market research.

Operator Semi-Annual Update

The FDFA previously announced to the FDFA members throughout 2010 to hold the dates for a potential semi-annual meeting to be held in Ottawa from April 11th to 14th, 2011. As noted in previous communications, the FDFA Board made a decision to tentatively request our members to hold the date until the Board determines whether we have enough valid agenda items to warrant our members coming to a live semi-annual meeting. We continue to respectfully request our operator members hold the April dates noted above.

The FDFA will confirm to our operator's mid-February whether or not the semi-annual meeting will be confirmed or not take place. Again, the board will discuss the semi-annual meeting at the upcoming live board meeting in Mississauga.

Strategic Review Update

As noted in previous FDFA and Duty Free media outlets, the FDFA is currently in discussions with CBSA regarding the Strategic Review and its future impact on the Canadian Duty Free Industry. What is the Strategic Review? All government programs are reviewed on a regular cycle to ensure they are effective and efficient, that they respond to the priorities of Canadians and that they are in line with core federal responsibilities. This ensures that funding is allocated to programs that are a high priority for Canadians and that these programs produce results.

Since CBSA is currently undergoing this Strategic Review process, the Canadian Duty Free Industry and its current regulations are being re-examined within this process. As such, the FDFA and CBSA have developed a formalized working group to ensure continuous dialogue. Our goal is to ensure that our industry pillars remain in tact and to ensure that decisions made in relation to streamlining of the program are done in a manner to create greater efficiencies and less administrative oversight that do not unduly impact our store's operational activities.

This government relations issue is the top  priority for the FDFA at this time, and we will continue to apprise our members of any critical updates as these discussions continue.

Philip was in his role as Regional Manager for six years. Philip has transferred to Bahrain to head up Aer Rianta International's Middle East operations – which is a fantastic opportunity for Philip and we wish him our very best in his new role.
