Blue Water Bridge – “Eye Spy with My Little Eye….”

For those that are not aware, Sarnia, ON, is being watched quite carefully by their American neighbours – in Port Huron, Michigan, in the form of a massive balloon which is shaped like an airplane wing that carries a $1 million camera that is sensitive enough to read the name of a ship about 14 kilometres away. The Sierra Nevada Corp. is testing it at the St. Clair River boundary and hopes to sell the technology to US Homeland Security.

As a response to this larger than life camera, a protest was being planned in Sarnia called “Moon the Balloon”, scheduled for August 15th, 2009. The protest was picking up so much momentum, that a Facebook group dedicated to the “Moon the Balloon” protest had over 1400 members, indicating their attendance at the protest. The organizer of the event was quoted as saying “no cheeks will be turned away”, as many protesters feel that this camera is infringing on the privacy of Canadian citizens.

Update: The protest hit an unexpected snag less than a week before its scheduled Saturday, August 15th, 2009 date. On Sunday, August 9, that surveillance balloon was put out of commission when it was hit during a storm over Michigan. The surveillance balloon is now out of commission for about a month. When the balloon is resurrected, the protesters in Sarnia plan to reschedule a new protest date.
