2014 Tobacco Increases as Announced February 11th – Federal Budget 2014

On February 11, 2014, Finance Minister Jim Flaherty presented his Economic Action Plan 2014 – a budget plan which committed the government to eliminate the preferential excise duty treatment of tobacco sold in duty free stores. As a result, and effective immediately, the excise rates for ‘duty free’ products will be consistent with the rates of excise duty imposed on the same products sold in conventional domestic retail stores.
