FDFA Gold Standards Awards 2019

Sponsored by: Americas Duty Free & Travel Retailing, Travel Markets Insider, The Moodie Report and the Retail Council of Canada

The FDFA conducted a review of the awards program to optimize participation and ensure it continues to evolve. The award finalists will be announced October 30th and winners recognized at the Imperial Gala & Awards Evening November 13, 2019 in Toronto. The new program includes:

  • Streamlined award descriptions and voting criteria
  • Increased voting eligibility
  • New award names for two operator awards
  • Addition of two new awards:
    • Star of Show award for the convention
    • Outstanding Contributor Award
  • Early release of award finalists

Process

Submissions and Nominations: use the links below to download a submission form for applicable awards. Once completed, send to the FDFA office by the deadline indicated.

Voting: online voting links will be live soon, available until September 20, 2019.

Finalists will be announced October 30th. The winners will be presented at the Imperial Gala & Awards Evening at the Kind Edward Hotel in Toronto on November 13, 2019.


 

SUPPLIER AWARDS

Best New New or Relaunched Brands of the Year Awards

  • Fragrance / Cosmetics
  • Liquor / Beer / Wine / Tobacco
  • Confectionery / Food / Souvenirs
  • Jewellery / Watches / Handbags / Accessories

The Best New or Relaunched Brands of the Year Awards will recognize products introduced, or rebranded through an event or campaign, since the last convention. Supplier members are invited to nominate one new product for each of the above categories for consideration.  Distributors may nominate one product from each of their supplier’s brands. Nominated products must be sold in at least 8 Canadian duty free stores.

Voted by duty free operators on the following judging criteria:

  1. Sales impact, market demand (25%)
  2. Product value (25%)
  3. Customer satisfaction (25%)
  4. In-store activation and supplier assistance (25%)

Supplier of the Year Awards

  • Category A (small businesses)
  • Category B (large companies / international corporations)
  • Distributor / Agent

The Supplier of the Year will be presented to the supplier who demonstrates best in class in how they partner and communicate with duty free stores taking into consideration; product selection, availability, timelines, and value.

Voted by duty free operators on the following judging criteria:

  1. Dependable communications with store/staff (25%)
  2. Product value, selection and availability (25%)
  3. Industry knowledge, market trends (25%)
  4. Staff training, support, merchandising tools (25%)

(NEW) Star of Show Award
A showcase platform for suppliers to present new products, displayed at the Opening cocktail and FDFA Registration. Operators and buyers will vote to determine the Star of Show 2019.

Nominations: products will be accepted at the FDFA Convention Registration desk November 10/11, 2019.

 


 

OPERATOR AWARDS

Outstanding Duty Free Employee of the Year Award
The Outstanding Duty Free Employee of the Year Award will be presented to the employee whose professionalism, dedication, attitude, and quality of service best exemplify excellence in the industry. Nominations may be submitted by any duty free operator member.

Voted by the FDFA Judging Committee on the following criteria:

  1. Attitude and dedication (20%)
  2. Leadership, cooperation and teamwork (20%)
  3. Maintains exemplary work standards (20%)
  4. Goes above and beyond to improve his/her store (20%)
  5. Commitment to customer satisfaction (20%)

Best Marketing / Merchandising Award
The Best Marketing / Merchandising Award will be presented to the land border duty free store that has devised and implemented the year's most outstanding marketing or merchandising initiative.  Nominations may be submitted by land border duty free operator members.

Voted by the FDFA Judging Committee on the following criteria:

  1. Efficiency & viability of the initiative (25%)
  2. Innovativeness/uniqueness (25%)
  3. Demonstrates, attracts or enhances awareness (25%)
  4. Impact on sales or customer experience (25%)

Outstanding Achievement or Innovation Award
The Outstanding Achievement or Innovation Award will recognize the land border duty free store that develops a new, forward-thinking approach to a service, process or practice, that positively impacts their operations, community or business in general. Nominations may be submitted by land border duty free operator member.

Voted by the FDFA Judging Committee on the following criteria:

  1. Creativity/originality/uniqueness of the achievement or innovation (25%)
  2. Demonstrates success in areas of innovation, service excellence or skills development (25%)
  3. Positively impacts customer experience (25%)
  4. Exemplifies or stimulates the development of a broader growth, innovation and product development strategy (25%)

Airport Duty Free Operator of the Year Award
The Airport Duty Free Operator of the Year Award will be presented to the operator that exemplify best practices in all aspects of its operations. The staff foster exceptional customer experience practices and demonstrate innovation and vision for a thriving duty free industry. Operators are invited to submit a nomination showcasing their store and qualification based on criteria.

Voted by supplier members selling to stores in more than one province, on the following criteria:

  1. Product display and merchandising (25%)
  2. Maintains a clean well-kept shopping environment (25%)
  3. Contributes to growth, innovation and product development (25%)
  4. Collaborative and knowledgeable staff (25%)

Platinum Awards

  • Category A (small border stores)
  • Category B (medium / large border stores)

The Platinum Awards recognizes land border duty free stores that exemplify best practices in all aspects of its operations. The staff foster exceptional customer experience practices and demonstrate innovation and vision for a thriving duty free industry. Operators are invited to submit a nomination showcasing their store and qualification based on criteria.

Voted by supplier members selling to stores in more than one province, on the following criteria:

  1. Product display and merchandising (25%)
  2. Maintains a clean well-kept shopping environment (25%)
  3. Contributes to growth, innovation and product development (25%)
  4. Collaborative and knowledgeable staff (25%)

(NEW) Outstanding Contribution Award
This award has been created to recognize an individual or company that has made outstanding contributions to the Canadian Duty Free industry.  While the recipient of this award may have made an outstanding contribution within the last year, potential winners may also be evaluated based on outstanding contributions made over the life of the Canadian Duty Free Industry.

Voted by the FDFA Board of Directors on the following Criteria:

  1. Lasting Positive Impact on the Canadian Duty Free Industry and/or FDFA
  2. Contribution to growth, reputation of Canadian Duty Free Industry as a whole
  3. Enhanced image of Canadian Duty Free Industry both in Canada and Internationally
